I get asked about the magic system in the Infernum Academy Series. I get asked about the love interests. I get asked about the wings.

Nobody asks about the building.

Which is funny, because the building is doing more than any of them.

The inscription over the gates of Infernum Academy reads: ALL KNOWLEDGE HAS A COST. THE CURIOUS PAY FIRST.

Most readers take this as a warning. It isn’t. It’s a statement of institutional policy. The Academy charges tuition. The currency is willingness. And the building keeps impeccable records of who has paid.

Infernum Academy is not haunted. There’s no ghost in the walls, no trapped soul animating the stone. What the Academy has is closer to memory. Five centuries of accumulated institutional judgment, stored in the architecture, expressed through behavior that looks like coincidence until you notice the pattern. A torch burns too low to navigate by. A door sits ajar in a more inviting direction. A sound from the east passage seems to require investigation. Eleven small redirections in as many days, each individually unremarkable. Collectively, the most consistent opinion anyone in the building has expressed to Eva since she arrived.

But the Academy doesn’t give Eva what she wants. It gives her what she’s ready for. And the difference between those two things is the entire book.

Here’s what I mean. Eva walks past a door seven times before the building lets her reach it. She doesn’t know what’s behind it. She doesn’t know the building is keeping her from it. She just knows that every morning her feet take her a slightly different route, and the route never includes that corridor. The restricted section door recognizes her hand on the first try, because the restricted section is something she’s ready for. The iron door in the old wing stays cold under everyone’s palm for the entire book.

The building cares about sequence.

This is the thing I find most interesting about the Academy, and the thing I think most readers feel without quite naming. The order in which Eva discovers things matters as much as the things themselves. She finds the garden before the tower. She finds Liraeth’s papers before the node. She finds the pre-Foundation corridor before the Headmaster’s office. None of this is random. The building has been rehearsing this for five centuries, preparing for a person it knew was coming, executing the discoveries in the correct order. The patience of stone that has been waiting long enough that waiting became its natural condition.

The curious pay first. But the building decides what you’re paying for, and when.

And then there’s the other thing the Academy does. The thing that made Soran stop in a corridor and say, with genuine wonder in his voice: Can it do that?

Three hundred years in this building. The foremost scholar of the Veil. A man who has made his life’s work inside these walls. And the Academy shows him something he has never seen it do. The walls shift. Not the grinding-stone fantasy cliché. A fractional movement, barely visible. Corridors that were passable becoming corridors that discourage approach through no mechanism you could describe mechanically and every mechanism you could describe by the hair on the back of your neck. The stone takes on a quality that communicates very clearly: not here.

The Academy had been holding that in reserve. Five centuries of preparation, rehearsed in the building’s long memory without ever being executed, waiting for the moment it was needed. The curious pay first, and sometimes the cost is finding out that the place you’ve lived for three hundred years has been keeping secrets from you too.

I built the Academy this way because I wanted a setting that could be wrong about you and right about you at the same time. A building that says not yet to a door you need and yes, now to a door you didn’t know existed. The inscription isn’t a warning. It’s a contract. And the building honors the contract with more patience and more precision than any person in the story.

The Academy keeps its own records. So do I. Some of what those records contain is for later books. Some of it is for these letters.

The Note He Almost Didn’t Write

If you’ve read What Heaven Couldn’t Keep, you know the note. Three lines. The lamp will be on.

What you don’t know is what happened the three days before he wrote it.

This is Soran’s side.

Three Days

SORAN

The pen had been in my hand for fifteen minutes.

I was aware of the duration because I had always been aware of duration. Three hundred and twelve years will do that — not the counting itself, but the particular quality of attention that develops when you have spent long enough in one building to understand that time does not pass; it accumulates. It has weight. It settles into surfaces and into the set of one’s hands and into the space between a thought and the decision to act on it.

Fifteen minutes with the pen. The lamp burning. The jar on the shelf behind me, where it had been for forty years, where it would remain.

I was not composing a note to a student.

I was composing a note to the person who had named my eleven questions back to me in a sequence that was not the sequence I had presented them in but the sequence in which they mattered, and who had then looked at me as if the reordering were obvious, as if any person paying adequate attention would have arrived at the same conclusion.

She did not understand — could not yet understand — what it meant for someone to reorder your questions into the shape they actually held. She had been a scholar for weeks. I had been one for centuries. The distance between those two facts should have made her observations preliminary. Foundational, perhaps, but preliminary.

They were not preliminary.

The note required three lines. I had written three-hundred-page framework analyses in less time than I had spent on three lines.

The final text in the framework series is in my office.

True in that a conversation about the framework’s final implications was, in fact, what I intended. Among other things.

Come at the ninth hour if you want it.

The conditional was important. I had been her advisor for ten weeks and her professor for longer than that, and the asymmetry of the relationship was not something I could afford to miscategorize. The conditional created a door she was not required to walk through.

The third line was the problem.

The third line had been the problem for three days, because the third line was the place where the professional assessment and the other thing — the thing I had been managing since the first session, since she raised her hand and asked a question that indicated she had been reading three levels below the assigned material and had opinions about what she found there — converged. Three hundred and twelve years of a particular practice: the work is the work, and the rest is maintained at the distance the work requires.

The jar behind me on the shelf.

Liraeth had been my advisee. Liraeth had been brilliant and methodical and had asked questions I did not have answers to, and I had maintained the distance, and she had gone to the Veil with her scholarship and her questions, and the Assembly had —

The pen was still in my hand.

Three days. I had told her soon. She had not pressed. She was not, I had observed across ten weeks of increasingly compromised objectivity, someone who pressed. She arrived at the edge of a thing and she waited there with her full attention and her notebook, and she waited, and I had never, in three hundred and twelve years, encountered patience that was also a kind of heat.

I wrote the third line.

The lamp will be on.

I set the pen down with the flat of two fingers. I looked at what I had written. The scholar’s hand, steady, no evidence in the letterforms of what the sentence cost.

It was not a statement about the lamp. She would know that. She knew the office at all hours, the lamp at all hours, the four feet of air between the door and the desk at all hours. The lamp had never required announcement.

The lamp will be on meant: I have decided. The decision is not the careful one. The decision is the one that costs the careful its three-hundred-year deposit, and I am making it with my eyes open, because the alternative, another forty years of the distance, another set of questions filed without the answer that has been visible since the third week, has become more expensive than what it was protecting me from.

I folded the note. I placed it on the stack of framework installments she would find on her chair in the morning.

Then I sat in my office with the lamp and the jar and the shelves in their use-order. In twelve hours she would read three lines and know exactly what they meant, because she always knew exactly what things meant. She would come at the ninth hour. I would be standing rather than seated. She would notice that immediately, because she noticed everything.

I thought about the gloves I had not worn since the night in her room. The way the air felt different on bare hands after so many years of the barrier.

There was a question she asked in the fourth session that I had answered with the professional version. Tomorrow night, I would answer with the real one.

I reached behind me and touched the jar.

I know, I said. To the ash, to the forty years, to the version of myself that had believed the distance was the kindest option.

I know. It was enough. It was right for as long as it was right. And now there is someone in the hallway who re-sorted my questions into the shape they actually hold, and the careful has cost enough.

I left the jar where it was.

I turned the lamp’s wick up.

I waited.

I had been teaching Infernal Theory for three hundred and twelve years and I had not, in that time, lost the habit of arriving at exactly the scheduled hour.

Not early. Early communicated anxiety or eagerness, both of which were conditions I had spent considerable effort ensuring I did not communicate. Not late, which communicated disregard, and I did not disregard the work or the students or the time, even when the students were unremarkable and the time was one more hour in a sequence of hours that had long since stopped distinguishing themselves from each other. The hour arrived and so did I. The folder went on the table. My hands went flat on the surface and my eyes went to the blackboard, and in the seconds before turning to face the room the preparation was the same as it had been on every first day for three centuries: the session plan, the pacing, the calibration of tone that would establish the semester’s terms before the first assessment had been assigned.

The room was the room. Twenty-odd students in the configuration that first days always produced — the ambitious ones near the front, the political ones near each other, the uncertain ones near the walls. I knew the configuration because I had seen it three hundred and twelve times and it did not vary in any way that mattered. House insignias. Borrowed notebooks. The particular quality of attention that first-day students brought to a classroom, which was attentiveness without yet knowing what they were attending to.

The turn to face them was routine. The sweep was routine — left to right, top to bottom, the same motion made on three hundred and twelve first days, the motion that had long since stopped requiring thought. Front row, second row, third row. The usual arrangements. The usual faces, or near enough to the usual that the distinction did not register.

Back row.

The sweep stopped.

Not visibly. Three hundred and twelve years of practice had made the not-stopping invisible. The sweep continued to the end of the room and returned to the folder and my hands returned to the table surface and my mouth opened and the words came out — the words about the correct reason to be in this class, about the first assessment, about the fundamental question of infernal theory. Same precision as always. Nothing in the delivery altered.

But I was no longer in the session plan.

She was sitting in the back row. Not the corner — the corner would have been a statement. The back row was subtler: distance without retreat. A borrowed notebook and a borrowed pen arranged on the desk in front of her with the kind of neatness that said more about the mind behind it than the mind had spoken yet. She was looking at the blackboard.

She was looking at the blackboard the way I looked at problems.

The thought arrived before any framework for it. Ahead of the proof, the way a result sometimes does when the proof will take years to catch up. The thought was: there she is.

The folder opened. My eyes went down.

The session proceeded. Forty minutes on the theoretical foundations, the same forty minutes they always took, the pacing long since embedded in muscle memory. The back row received the same duration of attention as every other row. This was a thing that had never required enforcement before. Enforcement implied effort. Effort implied something pulling against the enforcement.

She understood most of it.

The evidence was in the way she wrote. Three centuries of student notebooks provided the comparison and hers was not like the others. Not the frantic capture of students who understood nothing. Not the sparse performance of students who believed they already did. She wrote the way scholars write — selectively, when a point connected to a framework she was already carrying. The pen moved and stopped and moved again and the stopping was the part that mattered, the part that meant she was fitting new material into an existing structure rather than receiving it passively.

Watching her pen was not part of the session plan. The pen did not care about the session plan.

She made it to the fifty-minute mark before she raised her hand.

The question had been forming for ten minutes before the hand went up. Not a student who had a question — a student in whom a question was building, the way pressure builds in a system that has found a boundary. Long experience made the difference visible. Her attention changed. She had reached the edge of what the session was giving and she was deciding whether to go past it.

She went past it.

The question she asked connected the infernal energy density model to Veil boundary permeability in a way that the students should not have been able to do from the first session’s material alone. She was working from an external framework — a prior body of knowledge about boundary mechanics that had not come from my curriculum because my curriculum had not yet reached the relevant material.

Forty-seven years of Watcher observation. The Veil activity reports. She was connecting what she had observed from above to what I was teaching from below, and the connection was not only correct but elegant, and I stood at the central table with the chalk in my hand and the question in the air between us and I thought: she has been looking at this from the other side.

The answer came with more precision than a first session typically warranted, and the room would note that, and the noting did not matter.

It mattered afterward.

It mattered in the office at the end of the day with the lamp burning and the folder closed and my gloves on the desk and the jar of ash on the second shelf where it always was. The jar had been there for forty years. The wound it represented had stopped being fresh a long time ago; it had become part of the room, part of me, the way grief becomes architecture when you carry it long enough. Not looked at differently in years.

Tonight I looked at it differently.

Not because anything had changed in the jar or the grief or the forty years. Because something had arrived in a first-session classroom that I had no place for, and the absence of a place for it meant everything in the room was shifting slightly to accommodate it, including the jar, including the grief, including the man who had been sitting in this chair for three centuries doing the same thing and doing it well and not expecting that to change.

The instinct was to treat it the way the eleven questions got treated — the ones the scholarship could not answer, the ones carried in the private notation of a man who had not yet found anyone to give them to. Apply the method. Be patient. Wait for more data.

But the method required stillness and I was not, tonight, entirely still.

The gloves went on. The office closed. The corridor to the faculty wing passed under the same economical gait it always did, the gait that did not waste itself, and the back row was not a thing being thought about.

The back row was the only thing being thought about.

Through the faculty wing and through the evening hours and past the point where the torches shifted to their overnight calibration. A question that should not have been possible from a first session’s material. A woman who had fallen from the place that had killed the person whose ash was on my shelf.

This is going to cost me something.

That thought sat for a long time in the way true and inconvenient things sit — heavily, and without leaving.

Time. Give it time.

There would be less of it than anyone knew.
